Built with a deep respect for traditional woodworking, this 10-foot farmhouse table was designed for a client who valued authenticity, heritage, and handcrafted quality. They wanted something classic and made with solid hardwood with darker tones to contrast the white oak floors in their home.
To stay true to the time period when farmhouse tables first gained popularity, I selected Red Oak. This species was widely used in American furniture throughout the 1800s and early 1900s. Its strength, open grain, and historic presence made it the perfect choice. To achieve the desired depth and warmth, I applied a custom stain that darkens the wood’s natural color without obscuring its character.
Every joint in the leg and skirt system is hand-fit using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, locked in place with handmade oak dowels. This time-honored method not only ensures structural integrity but reinforces the table’s heirloom quality.
To complete the set, I built two matching benches with traditional skirts and a soft teardrop reveal, echoing the table’s proportions and style. Together, they create a timeless, grounded presence that's meant to serve as a gathering place for generations.
