At grOv, we work primarily with White Oak and Black Walnut for their strength, beauty, and versatility. These trusted materials bring warmth, richness, and timeless character to every piece we build.

Eastern White Oak - Quercus Albag

Eastern White Oak is a cornerstone hardwood. Strong, steady, and full of quiet character. Its light, neutral tone and natural grain variation make it incredibly versatile, fitting effortlessly into both modern and classic spaces. Sourced regionally and crafted with care, it’s a material that wears in, not out. Chosen for its strength, beauty, and the way it grounds a room.

American Black Walnut - Juglans Nigra

Black Walnut is deep, rich, and effortlessly sophisticated. With tones ranging from espresso brown to soft caramel, it’s a showstopper in any form. Naturally smooth to the touch and full of organic depth, this species brings warmth, contrast, and quiet luxury to any room. It’s a material that speaks softly but leaves a lasting impression.

Northern Red Oak - Quercus Rubra

Red Oak brings a bold, familiar warmth with its pronounced grain and subtle pinkish undertones. A staple in American woodworking, it’s strong, reliable, and versatile. Red Oak is perfect for finishes that celebrate texture. Whether stained dark or left in its natural tone, Red Oak offers a grounded, approachable look that works beautifully in both rustic and refined spaces. A great choice for a variety of projects.

We occasionally offer additional Northeastern hardwoods including Ash, Hard Maple, and more depending on availability, application, and finish compatibility. These species are offered by request only and may carry an additional charge due to sourcing, prep, and finishing considerations.

The Core Kit

Before committing to a piece, get to know the materials. Our sample kit includes hand-finished swatches of White Oak and Black Walnut, cut from the same full thickness stock used in our furniture.

We work closely with trusted mills to select materials that reflect the natural character of our region by prioritizing quality, consistency, and a conscious approach to sourcing. This keeps our carbon footprint lower and our connections stronger.

By building every piece in-house, we’re able to minimize waste, make smart use of offcuts, and stay grounded in resourcefulness.
